Best SD Card for Nikon Z50 II

Expert recommendations based on Nikon Z50 II specifications

Recommended Spec

SD UHS-I (U3 / V30 or faster)

The Z50 II has one UHS-I SD slot and records 4K/60 with a 1.5x crop and 4K/30 uncropped. A U3/V30 card covers its top video bitrate, and a UHS-I card rated near 90 MB/s write clears the buffer fastest after a burst.

Official Nikon Z50 II SD Card Requirements

  • Format: SD UHS-I
  • Minimum Speed: U3 / V30 (30 MB/s write)
  • Maximum Capacity: No official limit
Why these requirements? Nikon's APS-C mirrorless camera has a 20.9MP sensor and a single SD UHS-I slot. U3/V30 cards cover 4K video. For bursts at 11 fps, the card's write speed decides how fast the buffer clears, so a faster UHS-I card helps photographers more than videographers.

SanDisk Extreme SD UHS-I

The SanDisk Extreme SD UHS-I reads up to 180 MB/s and writes up to 90 MB/s. Its V30 rating covers 4K in most cameras up to about 200 Mbps.

Target User: Content creators, videographers, and mobile device users requiring high-speed storage
Best For: Action Cameras, Smartphones & Tablets, Mirrorless Cameras

Consider the SanDisk Extreme over other mid-range options, such as the Lexar Professional 633x or the Kingston Canvas Reactor, which offer similar performance and reliability without the added luxury features.

Lexar Professional 633x SD (Blue Series)

The Lexar Professional 633x SD is a budget V30 card that reads up to 95 MB/s and writes up to 45 MB/s. It covers 1080p and 4K up to about 100 Mbps.

Target User: Hobbyists, amateur filmmakers, and professionals on a budget
Best For: Mirrrorless Cameras, DSLR Cameras, Smartphones & Tablets

Consider this option over more expensive alternatives when seeking a budget-friendly solution with reliable performance. In comparison to some entry-level options, this card is a significant step up, but may not keep pace with more high-end alternatives. However, for those on a tight budget, it's a great way to avoid overspending on SD card capacity and speed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What SD Card Do I Need for Nikon Z50 II?
The Nikon Z50 II takes a SD UHS-I card rated U3 / V30 or faster. 64GB or 128GB covers most owners, and the maximum is No official limit. Buy SanDisk, Lexar, Samsung or Kingston from a reputable seller: counterfeit cards are the most common cause of lost files.
Do the Nikon Z50 II and the original Z50 use the same SD card?
Yes, both take SD UHS-I cards, and V30 covers both. The Z50 II adds 4K/60 and 10-bit N-Log, which a V30 card still handles.
Is V30 required for Nikon Z50 II?
Yes. V30 guarantees 30 MB/s of sustained write, which keeps the Nikon Z50 II free of dropped frames, clips that stop early, or corrupted files. Faster cards work too.
What size SD card should I get for Nikon Z50 II?
64GB covers light use; 128GB suits heavy use. Maximum capacity: No official limit (256GB confirmed working).
Can I use older or slower cards with Nikon Z50 II?
Not below U3 / V30. Slower cards cause dropped frames, clips that stop early, or corrupted files. Check the card label for the U3 / V30 mark.
Is a UHS-II card faster in Nikon Z50 II?
No. The Nikon Z50 II has a UHS-I slot, so a UHS-II card runs at UHS-I speed. It only offloads faster in a UHS-II card reader.
Does the brand matter for Nikon Z50 II?
Yes. SanDisk, Lexar, Samsung and Kingston cards meet their rated speeds. Buy from the brand's store or a major retailer: counterfeit cards sold under those names are common on marketplaces.
What happens if I use the wrong card with Nikon Z50 II?
A card slower than U3 / V30 causes dropped frames, clips that stop early, or corrupted files. A card over the maximum capacity or in the wrong format may not be recognized.
How long will an SD card last in Nikon Z50 II?
Several years in normal use. Cards usually fail from wear or counterfeit flash, not age. Replace yours at the first write error, corrupted file or "card not recognized" message.
